The hearing took place following a request submitted to the investigating judge by the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medical and research report prepared by Dr. Zarzar had been previously submitted and included in the case file, also at the request of the Center, as part of its efforts to support the investigations with medical and research data regarding the harm suffered by victims and survivors, as well as their ongoing health care and on going follow-up needs. The published report can be accessed on the Center&#8217;s website [<a href=\"https:\/\/scm.org\/wp-content\/plugins\/pdfjs-viewer-shortcode\/pdfjs\/web\/viewer.php?file=https:\/\/scm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Short-and-Long-Term-Health-Consequences-of-the-2013-Sarin-Attack-in-Ghouta-Syria.pdf&amp;attachment_id=209313&amp;dButton=true&amp;pButton=true&amp;oButton=false&amp;sButton=true&amp;editButtons=true&amp;v=3.1.1&amp;_wpnonce=bde6b261c7#zoom=auto&amp;pagemode=none\">link<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hearing focused on the report&#8217;s field medical findings on persistent symptoms among survivors, alongside the challenges they encounter in securing specialized care and medical follow-up inside Syria and in countries of asylum. Additionally, Dr. Zarzar highlighted findings on reproductive health and pediatric conditions, underscoring the need for continued research to assess these observations and determine their potential connection to sarin exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, doctor and researcher Loulwa Zarzar stated : \u201c Listening to survivors and documenting their health conditions is essential to understanding their care and ongoing follow-up needs. The observations we have gathered call for continued scientific research to fully understand the potential long-term health effects of sarin exposure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center emphasizes the importance of supporting and continuing independent medical research in accordance with scientific standards, to contribute to documenting harm and understanding the needs of victims and survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe consequences of chemical weapons attacks do not end when the attacks themselves are over. Since filing the complaint alongside survivors, we have been working to ensure that justice processes address the ongoing harm they endure, while upholding their rights to care, accountability, and reparation. We look forward to seeing trials for these crimes held in Syria before an independent judiciary that guarantees fair proceedings and the participation of victims and survivors, and we hope the accumulated expertise in these cases will help build this national pathway in Syria\u201d&nbsp; said Mazen Darwish, General Director of the Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Submitting the report and hearing the researcher allows medical and research data on the conditions of survivors to be presented to the investigative judge. Assessing its evidentiary value and determining any additional measures that may be required remains within the sole discretion of the judiciary.&#8221;said Jeanne Sulzer and Cl\u00e9mence Witt, lawyers representing SCM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Case Background:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case stems from a criminal complaint filed in France in March 2021 by survivors of chemical attacks and the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM), with support from the Syrian Archive and the Open Society Justice Initiative. The complaint addresses the chemical weapons attacks on Zamalka and Eastern Ghouta in August 2013, relying on survivor testimonies, an analysis of the military chain of command, and documented evidence, including photographs and video footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the framework of this case, on November 14, 2023, French investigative judges issued international arrest warrants for Bashar al-Assad, Maher al-Assad, Ghassan Abbas, and Bassam al-Hassan, on suspicion of complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to these attacks. The issuance of these warrants marked a major milestone in the accountability process, built upon the efforts and testimonies of survivors, as well as the documentation and legal work of the Center and its partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) continues to support the progress of the proceedings and broader accountability efforts regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
